After a five-for on his debut, prowling tiger Mustafizur Rahman adorned another feather to his cap bagging a six-for in the second of the 3-match ODI series against India yesterday to become the second only bowler to claim consecutive five-wicket hauls in the first two matches.
His performance powered Bangladesh to defeat a six-wicket victory against India and complete a historical series win against the visitors at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
This was the 10th victory on the trot for the Tigers on home soil that also ensured Bangladesh’s berth in the Champions Trophy to be held in England in 2017.
Mustafizur snapped up six for 43 to inflict another humiliation to much-vaunted Indian batting line up, sending them crashing to a below par total of 200 in 45 overs. The Satkhira born 19-year old left-arm quickie was rather ruthless yesterday as the India batsmen once again were clueless about his lethal off-cutters.
The match was reduced to 47 overs after a two-hour rain delay with Bangladesh getting a winning target of 200 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis calculation. Shakib Al Hasan smashed 51 not out to help the side reaching past the target in just 38 overs.
Mustafizur joined Zimbabwe fast bowler Brian Vittori in taking five wickets in consecutive matches but his 11 wickets in the first two matches eclipsed the feat of Vittori’s 10.
He started the party with the wicket of Rohit Sharma who drived away from the body to point for a duck in the second ball of the match, thanks to a sizzling catch by Sabbir Rahman. Mustafizur came back in his second spell to dismiss Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni and Axar Patel in what could turn out to be a crucial batting powerplay that yielded only 17 runs and three wickets. The match decisively titled towards Bangladesh by then and they never looked back.
Mustafizur completed his second consecutive five-for taking out Ravichandran Ashwin and the feat was celebrated immediately as Mirpur raised itself to a big roar, giving the new hero a standing ovation. He would return after the rain break to immediately get rid of Ravindra Jadeja and end his spell with figures of 10-0-43-6, the second-best by a Bangladesh bowler in ODIs after Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Rubel Hossain who occupied the joint best slot with six for 26.
The teenager’s beguiling off-cutters to which India found no answer to, however, scripted Bangladesh’s 18th series victory and 14th at home. And once India was shot out for 200, Bangladesh sensed yet another comprehensive victory. The only disturbing factor was that the pitch was getting slower which was believed to give the Indian spinners some advantage.
But Bangladesh openers showed an audacious batting performance to set the tune. Tamim Iqbal and Soumya

Sarkar added 34 runs in 6.2 overs before the former edged to the slip at 13.  Soumya kept hitting and Bangladesh thereafter never fell behind the asking run rate.
His 34 off 47, including two fours and a six, was complemented by Litton Das’s fluent 36. Both Soumya and Litton were dismissed in the space of 12 runs to leave the side at 98 for 3, giving India a ray of rope. But it was quickly wiped out with Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim (31) sharing 54 runs at fluent pace to take the side closer to the target. Shakib took calculated risk in his 51 not out and hit five fours in his 62 balls knock.
The dismissal of Mushfiqur did not make any impact as Shakib and Sabbir closed out the game with 54 balls to spare, leaving the full house crowd in wild jubilation.
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel and Dhawal Kulkarni took one wicket apiece.
For them, opener Shikhar Dhawan was the highest scorer with 53, while captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni struggled to make 47. Suresh Raina was the other notable scorer with 34.
Rubel Hossain and Nasir Hossain bagged two wickets each, giving away 26 and 33 runs, respectively.
As Rohit Sharma’s lackadaisical approach in dealing Mustafizur caused his dismissal in the second ball of the game, Virat Kohli and Dhawan spent some jittery time in the crease in the face of some quality fast bowling by Bangladesh pacers, who hardly gave the Indian batsmen any chance to free their arms. After making single-digit figures in the last three matches, Kohli this time made 23. Skipper Dhoni, however, moved himself up the batting order but found it tough to cope with the pace quartet of Bangladesh. The situation worsened when Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu (0) were dismissed in a space of just one run to leave the side reeling to 110 for 4.
Suresh Raina and Dhoni then briefly made some resistance before Mustafizur got both of them with his lethal off-cutters to end India’s chance of making a big score. When the rain interrupted the game, India was 196 for 8 in 43.5 overs.
