Classroom shortage hampers education

Correspondent, N’ganj

A government primary school in sadar upazila has been facing from manifold problems, including classroom shortage against almost two thousand and five hundred students. The managing committee is running Deobhog Government Primary School under four shifts to cover the classroom shortage. Haji Uzir Ali had established the primary school and a junior high school on the campus with a playground in 1924. The junior high school was later upgraded to a high school.
During foundation, the primary school was a five-room building with two toilets. Later, when the number of students gradually increased, some local affluent people made it a two-storey building. But, now the existing classrooms cannot accommodate the students. So, the school managing committee is running classes with four shifts.
The president of the managing committee of the primary school, also grandson of Hazi Uzir Ali, told the Independent, “My grand father had established this primary school on 10 decimal land but has now shrunk to five decimals due to illegal occupation by the authorities of Deobhog Hazi Uzir Ali High School.”
Abdul Kayum, president of the primary school managing committee, said the school needs a four-storey building and at least 20 classrooms.
During a spot visit, it was found that the high school managing committee erected a wall in front of the primary school keeping no space for playing. Besides, the entrances of both schools remain blocked by the high school for the students and teachers.
As a result, primary school students and teachers enter the school through a narrow lane.
But the primary school has used a common gate in the last 96 years. Recently, the high school managing committee planned to shift the primary school from existing place as they have got more space. The high school managing committee has filled a ditch just to the west side of the primary school where there will be no playing facilities for the students.
Headmaster of the high school Uttom Kumar Shaha said, “I don’t know anything about the matter. It is totally a decision of the managing committee.” Shah Alam, a guardian of the primary school, said, “We don’t agree with replacing our school and closing playground.”
Mamata Begum, another guardian of the primary school, said, “We want back the playground and school building should be constructed on the existing land as it had been given by late Hazi Uzir Ali.”
