SI Masud rejoins work

Sub-inspector (SI) Masud Sikder, who allegedly assaulted Golam Rabby, an assistant director with Bangladesh Bank (BB), rejoined his service last week. Masud himself confirmed this to The Independent. According to sources at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters, Masud joined Tejgaon industrial police on May 31. He was temporarily suspended on January 11 after Rabby submitted a complaint. Earlier, on May 24, the DMP withdrew his temporary suspension order as it did not find evidence to support the allegations made by Rabbi. However, all the probe committees that were formed in this connection found Masud guilty of flouting departmental rules. According to their reports, Masud was wearing civilian dress during the incident, which was in violation of the official order. As he did not bring Rabby to the police station, he also did not fulfil his duty. He was accused of tarnishing the image of the police by the departmental probe committee. For these proven irregularities, the DMP authorities have cut Masud’s salary increment over the next two years as departmental punishment, official sources said.  Rabby filed a written complaint against the police officer to the deputy commissioner of DMP’s Tejgaon division on January 9. In his complaint, Rabby alleged that he was returning to his residence on the night of January 8 after withdrawing money from a bank ATM, through Mohammadpur Geneva Camp, when a police team led by SI Masud forcibly picked him up into the police van. The police members, led by Masud, tortured him and threatened to kill him and file false cases against him. Rabby, who works in BB’s communications division, claimed Masud did not take him to a police station but kept him confined in his vehicle in a bid to extort money from him that night. He also alleged that during his confinement in the vehicle, he witnessed many pedestrians being blackmailed by the police for money. Rabby, a Dhaka University alumnus, used to work as a news presenter at a TV station. A four-member bench, led by the Chief Justice, gave the order to accept a case, if Rabby filed a case against the police officials. However, Rabby declined to file a case to preclude further hassles.
