Some greedy traders in the name of food have been providing people with poison. They would be punished with the help of mobile courts. The purpose Food security Act 2013 would be implemented soon, said Food Minister Advocate Kamrul Islam.
He said: “If unscrupulous businessmen do not abide by laws hard actions would be taken against them. I hope people will not find any adulterated food after two years.”
The minister made the announcement at a discussion on safe foods during Ramadan at the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) building yesterday.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the round-table organised by FBCCI.
“We tried to close Iftar markets in 2007 but it was not possible and it would not be possible if we become aware, said the food minister.”
Referring to FBCCI, Kamrul Islam said: “Many of the factories that involved in food adulteration are your partners. But with the initiative of the government acts food security and formalin control have been formulated. There will be no trace of formalin in the markets in near future.”
Prime Minister's Media Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said the initiative taken by FBCCI would create pressure on dishonest business people. People would be safe from adulterated food once food security act is implemented.
FBCCI Director Md Helal Uddin said 4 crore lower class and another 4 crore higher class people depend on street Iftar. Various medicines are mixed up with street iftar foods which are hazardous to health. “For this reason we (FBCCI) have taken initiative to collect formalin free foods,” he said.
He urged all to get engaged in awareness building works in planned ways to ensure safe foods.
The round table was also attended by senior secretary of commerce ministry Hedayet Ullah Al Mamun, FBCCI acting president Hasina Newaj and others.
