Two-tier selection process

Ending all speculations, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) finally decided in principle to split the selection panel in order to make the selection process smooth and transparent.
While the existing selection panel led by Faruque Ahmed will remain same, there will be a selection committee, led by cricket operations chairman by default. The three member selection panel members, head coach, team manager will be in the selection committee.
The selectors will select the team while the selection committee will co-ordinate the whole things.
The process of the activities will be the head coach will give a strategic report to the selection panel before any series about what type of players he needs. The team manager will appraise the captain and vice-captain’s opinion about the team and any player. Based on those reports, the selection panel will select a team and then sit with the selection committee to finalise. Thereafter the team will be sent to BCB president for his approval.
Nazmul Hassan Papon, the BCB president termed the system as the best, stating it will remove disagreement amongst the coach, selector and captain over any particular player.
However the formation of team selection process will be submitted to the board meeting for the approval.
“There will be a selection panel of three members where there will be a chief selector and two selectors. They will go and select those who will come into the team. Another is selection committee. Selection committee won’t go and look for players. Selection committee will be consisted of three selectors including the chief selector and head coach and team manager. The Cricket Operations Chairman by default will be convener,” Papon clarified.
“The head coach here, basically before a particular series they will sit for a meeting. And then head coach will say what kind of players they want as per the team’s strategy. For example if we want to play more pacers against a particular team, he may say we need more pacers or likewise with spin, or left hand right hand, additional batsmen, depending on the condition. So the strategic issue will be set by the head coach. The manager will convey the captain, vice captain’s opinion. And based on that the selectors will select the team. Before it comes to me, the members will sit for another meeting and then sign the list and only then will it come to me. So here there is no chance for any kind of disagreement.”
It is believed due to the disagreement between the selection panel and head coach over the players for national set up led Papon to go for a unique selection process. During the 2015 World Cup the head coach Chandika Hathurusingha publicly expressed his rile over selection process since the selectors didn’t give the player he wanted for the team.
Papon also described the role of team manager: “We were discussing here that sometimes captain may come or manager, but overall we have thought that if it’s the manager then there’s no problem because everyone is in touch with the manager. As of now manager is from a cricketing background but if it changes then we will think about it. Another issue is that captain is different in each format there may be changes, but the manager is constant.”
The BCB boss also said that the head coach will watch the domestic league if he is in Dhaka.
“Today coach himself was talking about a few players. He is already looking the players like Hasanuzzaman and he is talking about some of them. If he is in Dhaka he will see the players. There is no such compulsion for him to go outside Dhaka to see the games. If he is in Dhaka he can see the games. Like for instance he wants to see tomorrow’s game. So the thing is that he will see the game.”
