Call to ensure safe habitat for wildlife

Green activists at a discussion yesterday stressed the need for protecting natural forests to ensure safe habitat for wildlife as well as a sustainable environment in the country.
They said the area of natural forests is dwindling in the country day by day due to unchecked deforestation, excessive population and its pressure on natural resources and unplanned urbanisation, destroying the habitats of wildlife,  reports UNB.
Poribesh Bachao Andolan (Poba) organised the discussion at its office in the capital, marking the World Environment Day 2016. The theme of the day this year is ’Go Wild for Life’.
Poba general secretary Engineer Abdus Sobhan, its executive member Tofail Ahmed, Poba secretary Ferdous Ahmed Ujjal and Modern Club president Abul Hasnat, among others, spoke at the discussion.
The speakers said forest and wildlife are the key components of the country’s nature while distinct ecosystems allowing forests and wild animals are formed in different regions of the country.
If wildlife is affected in a ecosystem, the whole ecosystem will collapse, they said, adding that rampant damage of greenery, unchecked poaching of wildlife, unplanned urbanisation, industrial pollution, water pollution, river grabbing and rampant use of pesticide are contributing to rapid destruction of environment in the country.
The green activists said forest and wildlife depend on each other in an ecosystem and if one is lost, the other will not survive.
