About 287 kilometers of roads, five bridges and culverts were totally damaged in Bhola during cyclone Roanu that lashed the coastal districts on May 23. Flash floods also hampered road communication of the district.
Local sources said about 50 kilometers of road including Ilisha-Rajapur road, Kachia–Baraipur road, Bedhuria-Charchatkimara road and Bhola-Laxmipur road in Bhola Sadar, about 20 kilometers of road in Madanpur of Daulatkha, 10 kilometers of road in Lalmohon, 15 kilometers of road in Tajumuddin, Tajum Uddin launch terminal road, and Chandpur-Mollahpukur roads were totally damaged.
Sometimes most of these damaged rural roads go under water during tidal surge, locals said. They also said due to damaged roads hundreds of pedestrians suffer much during transportation of goods everyday. They demanded immediate repairing of the damaged roads.
Besides, 9-km road in Borhan Uddin and 20-km road in isolated Char Kukrimukri union of Charfassion was also totally damage.
Abul Haseem Mohajon, chairman of Charkukrimukri union demanded high pucca roads for his union to save locals from tidal water.
When contacted, Siddiqur Rahman, excutive engineer of the Local Government and Engineering Departmnet in Bhola said about 110 kilometers of pucca roads under the department was damaged.
Najmul Islam, in-charge executive engineer of the Roads and Highways Department, Bhola office said about 50 kilometers of pucca roads of this department was also damaged by cyclonic storm ‘Roanu’.
Both of them said it was informed to the ministry of respective department for sanctioning fund for repairing of these damaged roads and culverts.
