President, PM shocked

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed deep shock at the death of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, reports UNB.
In a condolence message, President Hamid said the death of Muhammad Ali is an irreparable loss for sports arena. The President prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to his bereaved family members.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound shock at the death of boxing legend Muhammad Ali terming him the greatest boxer of all times.
In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina, now in Saudi Arabia on a five-day official visit, recalled the incredible performance of the three-time world heavyweight boxing champion in his career that spanned for three decades.
"Muhammad Ali was the greatest boxer of all times as he played an important role in popularising the event of boxing across the world, including Bangladesh," she said, adding his name will live on forever.  Hasina also sent a message to US President Barak Obama condoling the death of Ali.
"I am profoundly saddened at the unfortunate demise of the US and global boxing legend Muhammad Ali (Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi rajiun) last night, who was also an honorary citizen of Bangladesh," a foreign ministry statement quoted her as saying in the message sent from Jeddah.
She said "on behalf of the people and Bangladesh government, I convey our deepest condolence to you (Obama) and through you to the members of the bereaved family and to the people of the United States".
Calling Ali "one of the greatest sports icons of all time" she said he "has long been a household name in Bangladesh and is regarded with great respect and passion by its people for his extraordinary talent and skills in boxing, and also for his bold voice to uphold the dignity of all human beings and challenge all wrongs".  Muhammad Ali came to Bangladesh along with his wife in 1978 on a five-day visit. Ali was awarded honorary citizenship of Bangladesh while the boxing stadium in Paltan was named after him.
