The Awami League’s joint general secretary, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, yesterday said that the present government has “tried heart and soul” to make the union parishad (UP) elections peaceful, and has extended its all-out support to the Election Commission (EC).
“But, in a developing country like Bangladesh, social feuds are a common phenomenon, and this is the root cause of violence and killings in the UP polls. Besides, the BNP took part in the UP elections as part of a conspiracy to make the polls controversial, which is another cause of increased violence,” he said.
He was replying to a media-person at a press conference at party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office, after attending a preparatory meeting on the party’s upcoming 20th national council session. The session will be held on July 10 and 11, in Dhaka’s Suhrawardi Uddyan.
“Every elected government wants to hold elections in a peaceful manner. No government wants violence during an election. The violence that took place in the UP polls were due to social conflicts,” he said, adding that all political parties should come forward to minimise such incidents.
The UP polls were held in six phases under party banners, for the first time. But the fact remains that the UP polls this time broke all records in terms of violence. Over 100 people have already been killed and more than 10,000 people injured in the UP polls, according to media reports.
In a separate development, information minister Hasanul Haq Inu yesterday said incidents of violence in the last six phases of the UP elections are very unfortunate, but neither the administration nor the ruling party was responsible for such incidents.
