Desco signs contract with Korean company for five new substations

Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (Desco) yesterday signed a contract worth of Tk 455.42 crore with Hyosung Corporation of Korea to construct five GIS grid substation.
The GIS substation will be constructed in Uttara third phase area, Aftabnagar, Purbachal, Bashundhara and Gulshan/Banani area-all of which are under Desco jurisdiction.
The signing ceremony was organised by Desco at city hotel. Zulfiqar Tahmid, company secretary of Desco and Yun Tae-bum, general manager of Hyusung Corporation signed on behalf of their respective organisations.
Speaking on the occasion, Brig Gen (Retd) Shahid Sarwar, Managing Director of Desco said that with the construction works of these five new substations, the capacity for Desco to supply 640 MW of electricity at 132KV level and 300 MW electricity at 300KV will be created. It will also become possible for Desco to provide 4.5 lakh new connections with that. He informed that the total cost of the project is Tk 946.13 crore, out of which government of Bangladesh will provide Tk 160.47 crore, Desco will provide Tk 242.12 crore and the rest-Tk 543.53 crore will come from project aid.
Nasrul Hamid, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources in his speech as the chief guest asked Desco to improve its customer services.
“Giving connections to new subscribers is not your only task. As a public service provider, it is your duty to look after customer services. The customer services of Desco are not up to the mark. Try to work on that as soon as possible.”
Referring to the budget speech of Finance Minister AMA Muhit, Nasrul said that the government has put strong emphasis on human resource development for the power and energy sector. “All the power supply companies including Desco should concentrate on that.”
