Students of Jahangirnagar University have demanded that their dormitories should be kept open during the upcoming 41-day vacation. As per a press release issued by the JU authorities, the university will go on a vacation starting from June 7 on the occasion of the ongoing summer, upcoming month of Ramnadan and Eid-ul-Fitr. The university will reopen on July 17 and all the dormitories will remain shut from July 1 to July 14. The students have opposed the decision as they will have to face suffering if the dormitories remain shut for two weeks. The students claimed the decision would hamper their studies as they will face housing crisis if the dorms remain close as final exams of different departments were still going on. Bikash Sharkar, a third year student of Journalism and Media Studies department, said their final exam will start form the current month and will continue until July. He questioned how they would be able to continue studies for the exam if the dorms were shut. In this regard, several students’ bodies and cultural organisations have decided to meet the vice-chancellor. During the meetings, the VC would be urged to keep the dorms open, said sources. Robin Karmakar, president of ‘Sanatan Bidharthy Sangsad’, said, “Many students give tuitions to others or do part-time jobs to bear their academic expenses. So, they will have to stay at hall to continue those activities but if the dormitories are shut then these people will face problems”. Dipanjan Sidhanta Kajol, president of JU unit Chhatra Union said they have already urhed the authorities to cancel their decision. However, JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddque said the decision was taken at a syndicate meeting keeping different aspects of the campus in consideration. Revision of the decision is highly unlikely, he added.
