Alleged Joy-Safadi meet

‘BBC should explain their position soon’

Home minister terms BBC report ‘false and fabricated’

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has called upon the authorities concerned of BBC Bangla Service to respond to the challenge given by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy contesting the authenticity of a report that claimed a meeting was held between Joy and Israeli politician Mendi N Safadi. “We think that those who have published such false and fabricated news items implicating Joy in a meeting with Israeli politician Safadi, should explain their position soon,” he said while talking to reporters after attending a programme in the capital yesterday. The home minister also said it is very unfortunate that a renowned organisation like the BBC has published such a false, fabricated and baseless news item without verifying facts. “We didn’t expect it from a renowned organisation like the BBC,” he added. In his Facebook page, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, also the ICT affairs adviser to the PM, recently termed rubbish the BBC Bangla Service report saying that he didn’t  sit across the same table with Israeli Likud Party leader Mendi N Safadi, who is claimed by police as an agent of Israeli Intelligence agency Mossad, in anywhere in the planet. “I have never met Safadi, either in Washington or anywhere else in the world. He (Safadi) is lying. That he is willing to lie for the BNP also proves that he is involved in a conspiracy with that party. Otherwise, why would he lie on their behalf?” Joy had said.
Safadi, a member of Israeli right-wing Likud party, is a former adviser to Israeli Deputy Minister Ayoub Kara. He now runs a think-tank, Mandi N Safadi Center for International Diplomacy and Public Relations. Safadi’s name made headlines last month after a picture of him with BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury in India spread on social media and police arrested Aslam Chowdhury on charge of holding meeting with Mossad agent to hatch a conspiracy for ousting the present government. A sedition charge was also filed against the BNP leader. Later, BBC Bangla ran a story on May 27, where Safadi told the British news outlet that he also had a meeting with Sajeed Wazed Joy. It was him meeting with Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who introduced to him as a high official of Bangladesh government, the Israeli politician told the BBC. Safadi told BBC that the meeting took place in Washington DC some four to five months ago.
