Members of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers' Association (FBUTA) yesterday announced one-hour work abstention and human chain programme in 37 public universities, starting from 11am on June 28, to realise their demands, including a separate pay scale and reconstitution of the Eighth National Pay Scale.
They said the next course of action would be decided following internal discussions.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday sent letters to the secretary of the President, senior secretary of the Prime Minister, Cabinet secretary, senior secretary of the public administration ministry and senior secretary of the finance ministry to determine the proper position of FBUTA regarding its claims for a separate pay scale.
The FBUTA has already held various programmes like human chains, work abstention and sit-ins since May 14. Besides, pointing out its demands, it had handed over memoranda to the Prime Minister and the finance minister separately on June 15 and June 18, respectively.
FBUTA members cited the examples of their counterparts in the neighbouring countries like India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan where teachers enjoy better facilities, including good remunerations.
They said this at a press conference at the Dhaka University club building yesterday, with Prof. ASM Maksud Kamal, secretary general of the FBUTA, in the chair. They reiterated their demands, including new pay structure for the teachers and rescheduling of the proposed salary structure similar to the senior secretaries to eliminate all sorts of discrimination and to ensure the positions in the warrant of precedence in accordance with the expected salary structure.
They said teachers of Sri Lanka and Pakistan have separate pay scales. In Sri Lanka, there are five tiers from lecturer to senior professors. A lecturer gets a minimum of Rs. 39,754 to a maximum of Rs. 48,445 as salary per month, while a senior professor gets from a minimum of Rs. 67,100 to a maximum of Rs. 87,775.
In Pakistan, there are three tiers of teachers, including assistant professors who get a minimum of Rs. 1,04,000 to a maximum of Rs. 2,11,250, while a professor gets a minimum of Rs. 2,34,000 to a maximum of Rs 4,05,600.
Teachers in India, however, do not have separate pay scales like those of Sri Lanka and Pakistan. However, university teachers there get different allowances.
The FBUTA members said that university teachers of the neigbouring countries have strengthened the foundation of human resources by increasing their salaries
and dignity.
