Bangladesh awaits BGB mans return from Myanmar

Special Correspondent

Bangladesh is awaiting Myanmar’s response for the return of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Nayek Abdur Razzak, who was abducted by the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) from the frontier at Teknaf on June 17.
Director General (South Asia) of foreign ministry Asud Ahmed said the higher authorities will take necessary decision to free Razzak from BGP custody after waiting for an official reply from Myanmar till Monday.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Myanmar Sufiur Rahman met the permanent secretary of the Myanmar’s foreign ministry in Naypidaw on Saturday and reiterated Dhaka’s call to send Razzak back to Bangladesh immediately. The Bangladesh envoy was told that Razzak will be sent back to Bangladesh after fulfilling some immigration formalities, as he had entered Myanmar ‘illegally'.
Lt-Col. Abu Zar Al Zahid, chief of BGB 42 Battalion, said they spoke to BGP and was informed that they will hold a flag meeting at Mongdue to bring back Razzak. But they did not mention the time and date of the meeting, he said.
“The BGP authorities said their senior officials are busy sending back more than 566 Bangladeshi citizens rescued in Myanmar. At the same time, the BGP is yet to get clearance from the ministries concerned to send back the BGB man,” he added.
“According to the Bangladesh-Myanmar Border Agreement, 1980, the BGP can’t torture any border guard in custody,” he said.
State minister for home affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said the BGP will release Razzak very soon. “Our BGB officers are communicating with BGP authorities regularly and they (BGP) informed that they will release Razzak soon,” he added.
Biplob Kumar, a BGB trooper, was shot and Razzaq was abducted and his sub-machine gun (SMG) taken away by Myanmar’s BGP in the Naf river area near Jadimura on the Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar on June 17 morning. After this, the two border forces exchanged fire at Teknaf, home state minister had said.
On June 18, the foreign ministry summoned Myanmar’s ambassador to Dhaka, Myo Mint Than, to protest against the shooting at the border and abduction of a BGB trooper.
