As Bangladesh fielded an unchanged squad against a struggling Indian side in the second one day of the three-match ODI series at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday, there was a subtle but big change in the home side squad.
The change however was expected and it was due to happen at some point of time. Rookie Litton Kumar Das stood behind the stumps in place of regular wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim.
The long serving wicket-keeper’s wayward time behind the wicket was the reason behind the change. His finger injury made the wicket-keeping task hard for him but still he stuck to his decision to keep wicket. Once he dropped Shikhar Dhawan twice in the first match, call was enforced to strip him off from the wicket-keeping duty.
This is not new thing for Litton, who played wicket-keeping role in the one-off Test against the same opponent in lieu of Mushfiqur. But Litton made a memorable debut in ODI cricket taking five catches.
Ahead of this short bilateral series, it has been discussed that Mushfiq should quit at least one role from his treble roles including captaincy, batsman and wicketkeeper, for the betterment of his own career in Test.
He though batted with no hassle. However he was unable to stand behind the wicket because of pain on his finger and it made way for Litton to make debut in the Test as wicket-keeper.
Thereafter, he was the wicket-keeper in the first one day and made a record to take five catches in the match though he spilled a couple of catches at the very initial stage and faced the severe criticism from all the quarters. But Bangladesh’s overwhelming 79-run victory against the mighty India fell his weakness into oblivion.
Mushfiq sustained an injury in his ring finger during the last home series against Pakistan when he went to grip the catch of Azhar Ali.
However Litton Das’s wicket-keeping indicates that the role of Mushfiqur Rahim might be excluded from the series.
