Standing crops on 53,920 hectares of land along with nearly 50,000 tonnes of crop production in 11 coastal districts have been reported damaged as the devastating cyclonic storm 'Roanu' battered the country last week, reports BSS.
According to a primary crop damage report prepared by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the cyclone Roanu has damaged Aus, vegetables, oilseeds, transplanted aman, betel leaves, chili and Banana on 53,920 out of 1,78,597 hectares of land in 11 coastal districts during five days to May 24 when the cyclone hit the coastal region, a top official told BSS.
In addition to this, Roanu has ruined the crop production of 49,290 tonnes which included more than 32,000 tonnes of Aus rice, 16,209 tonnes of vegetables and more than 1000 tonnes of betel leaves of the cyclone-hit districts.
The DAE report initially said crops on 9,918 hectares of land in those 11 districts had totally been damaged during the cyclone.
Aus Seed beds on 5,610 out of 8,690 hectares of land, Aus crop on 28,695 out of 1,07,740 hectares, transplanted aman on 790 hectares out of 1320 hectares of land, oilseed on 1435 hectares out of 5068 hectares of land, vegetables on 13,084 hectares out of 37,180 hectares of land, plantation of betel leaves on 1696 hectares out of 7892 hectares of land, chili on 2135 hectares out of 9290 hectares of land have been affected due to the cyclone, said the DAE report.
Besides, the hog-plum (amra) and bananas on 500 hectares of land have been affected due to the cyclone, the report noted.
The cyclone affected crops on 15,045 hectares of land in Bhola district, 6,285 hectare land of Noakhali, 10,556 hectare of Borguna, 2,593 hectare of Pirojpur, 2,628 hectare of Barisal, 3824 hectare of Jhalakhathi, 6776 hectare of Patuakhali, 4495 hectare of Chittagong, 1083 hectare of Cox's Bazar, 135 hectare of Feni and 500 hectare land of Lakshmipur district.
"The cyclone Roanu could not cause any major damage to the agricultural crops in the coastal districts," said Hamidur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), saying that cultivation of late variety Aus along with alternative crop farming could compensate the crop loss due to the cyclone.
Even the ongoing drizzling across the country would help to increase the cultivation of Aus, transplanted Aus and Aman paddy at the coastal belt, said the DAE chief.
