14 get life term for murder

Comilla: A court here yesterday convicted 14 people and sentenced them to life term imprisonment for killing a youth in 1999, reports UNB. According to the prosecution, a group of criminals intercepted a bicycle carrying Matiur Rahman Babul, 25, son of Nazimuddin at Lalbagh in Sadar upazila, and stabbed him to death on March 21, 1999 following previous enmity. Later, they gouged out the eyes of Babul and dumped the body here. Nazimuddin filed a case against 20 people in this connection with Kotwali Police Station. Police submitted chargesheet against 20 people on April 11, 2000. However, five of the accused died during the trial. After examining records and 11 witnesses, Comilla Additional District and Session Judge Court-3 M Ali Ahmed pronounced the verdict yesterday acquitting an accused as allegations brought against him could not be proved.
The lifers are Ali Ahmed, Abul Bashar, Shafiqur Rahman, Sirajul Islam, Rafiq Mia, Raja Mia, Mohammad Ali, Abdur Razzak, Abdur Rahman, Mohon Mia, Doulat Ahmed, Bahar Mia, Najir Ahmed and Abdul Karim.
Of them, Bahar Mia, Najir Ahmed and Abdul Karim were tried in absentia.
