Bangladesh expressed its interest to expand business and demanded duty and quota free access of Bangladeshi goods to the Thai markets.
“Thai investment is needed for Bangladesh to expand trades between the two countries. Besides, it also needed duty and quota free access of Bangladeshi goods into Thai markets. The Thai authority is now giving facilities on 6,998 Bangladeshi items. We need such facilities on all Bangladeshi items including readymade garment, which would help to increase export in Thai markets,” commerce minister Tofail Ahmed said while inaugurating single country fair in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand yesterday, a media release issued by the commerce ministry said.
Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh (EPB) and Bangladesh embassy in Thailand jointly organised a 3-day single country fair on ‘Bangladesh trade and investment expo 2016’ in Bangkok.  “Bangladesh’s economy is growing fast. The government has developed 100 special economic zone to attract foreign investment. Many countries are investing in these special economic zones and the Thai investors can also take the opportunity in Bangladesh,” the commerce minister said.
He said Bangladesh’s RMG is the second largest sector across the globe.
“Bangladesh earned only US$ 348 in 1972 by exporting 25 items in 68 countries. Now Bangladesh is exporting 729 items in 196 countries with a target to earn US$ 35 billion this year,” Tofail Ahmed said.
Bangladesh has a target to earn US$ 60 billion by 2021 and the country will turn into a develop country by 2041 in the world, he added. Bangladesh exported goods to Thai markets only US$ 32.76 million last year, the commerce minister said, adding that Bangladesh imported goods worth US$ 680.5 million from Thailand last year.
“We are interested to expand our business with Bangladesh. We will take initiatives so that Bangladesh could increase its trade in Thai markets,” Apiradi Tantraporn, commerce minister of Thai government said at the function.  The Thai commerce minister further said that their investors are also interested to invest in Bangladesh.
“There are huge demands of Bangladesh’s jute bags in Thai markets. So, the Bangladeshi traders can take the opportunity by exporting this item to Thailand,” Mrs Tantraporn said.
Among others, state minister for energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid, senior secretary of commerce ministry Hedayetullah Al Mamun, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Thailand Sayeda Muna Tasnim, vice-chairman of EPB Mafruha Sultana, FBCCI president Abdul Matlub Ahmad and chairman of Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade Isara Vongkusolkij also spoke at the inaugural function.
