Barisal Metropolitan Police on Sunday night arrested a Bangaldesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader over killing of another leader of the party Rezaul Islam murder case from a cabin of Dhala bound launch MV Kalam Khan at Beltola area of the city.
The arrested was identified as Mehedi Hasan, the main accused of the murder.
Rezaul Islam, former student of the college and organising secretary of BCL Barisal Polytechnic Institute unit and city BCL leader, was killed on May 27 night at Polytechnic Institute gate area by a group of terrorist of factional groups. Four others were injured during the attack.
The incident took place over establishing supremacy on the campus.
Elder brother of victim filed a murder case in this connection on Sunday night with Barisal Kotwali Model Thana. After filing the case police was informed that main accused in the case tried to flee from Barisal by a Dhaka bound launch MV Kalam Khan. The launch already left Barisal ghat at 9Pm last night. Police later followed the launch by a speed boat and stopped the launch on Kirtonkhola River in Beltola area of the city and arrested the accused.
A total 14 persons, including BCL city unit president Jashim Uddin Zashim was the accused in the murder case. After interrogating the arrested Mehedi police started drives for arresting others accused in the case, said Md Ataur Rahman, officer in charge of Barisal Model Kotwali Thana.
After hearing the drive of police a large section of BCL city unit leaders left Barisal city.
