A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment and fined Tk10, 000, and in default to suffer three months more imprisonment in a case filed for smuggling gold bars through Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport in 2014.
The court of senior special session judge Md Shah Nur handed down the verdict.
The convicted was identified as Abdullah Al Amin, son of Kabir Ahmed, hailing from Binajuri under Raozan Upazila of Chittagong. He was an expatriate of UAE. He is absconding now after getting bail, said the court sources.
On September 21, 2014 at around 10am Abdullah Al Amin came from Dubai by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. After landing the flight Amin was detained as his behavior was suspicious. Searching his body a total of 58 gold bars were seized from his possession. He was handed over to Patenga police station after seizing his passport, said advocate Md Fakruddin Chowdhury, Chittagong Metropolitan public prosecutor (PP).
“Imam Hossain, assistant commissioner of Customs filed a case with Patenga police station accusing Amin for smuggling gold worth about Tk 3 crore,” said the PP.
After investigating the case, police submitted the chargesheet indicting Amin on January 31, 2015, said the PP. On April 13, 2015 charge was framed against him, said the court sources.
After examining eight witnesses and records the court handed down the verdict, said the PP.
