Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon yesterday quelled the fear over intervention on selectors’ activities, stating that the revamped selection committee will make the national team selection process more transparent and smooth.
The BCB chief said the coach’s role will be widely expanded in a bid to help the selectors in national team selection process. The selection committee had some differences with the head coach Chandika Hathurusingha over the selection process in the last two years and in some cases the difference was so vast that the president had to intervene in it. Papon apparently wants better coordination in this case as he explained, “The coach will have to watch the domestic matches like the selectors. In that case he can give input into the selection process which in the long run will help reduce the differences.”
“If the coach plays a role of selector, it will also help us to find out the talented cricketers from the grassroots level. And at the time, the selection committee and coach could reach a consensus about a particular player.”
Earlier, it was said the selection panel will be seven-member team including coach, cricketer operation chairman, team manager and four selectors. Papon said it is just a proposal sent by the working committee on which the board is yet to take any decision.
The board president however discussed the matters with the technical committee that included Ishtiaque Ahmed, Athar Ali Khan, Shafiqul Haque Heera, Jahangir Shah Badsha.
Papon said the selection system will remain the same but it will be given just a formal look.
“Normally the selectors discuss with the coach and captain before finalising a team. Then they submit it to the president through cricket operations. This system will be given a formal look, including coach in the process formally and adding a new selector. Nothing is finalised yet. We are just discussing about how we can make the selector process more smooth and transparent.”
The BCB boss heaped a huge praise on the Faruque Ahmed-led selection committee saying the national team’s performance spoke a volume of their success in this job.
The president also discussed about the umpiring issues in the domestic cricket and Bangladesh’s hunt for the pace and spin bowling coach with the technical committee.
“You know Heath Streak will not be with us so we are in the search of a pace bowling coach. Some name has been emerged for the job and we took the opinion of the technical committee in this regard. We also need a spin bowling coach. They gave their input in it.”
Four former players –Sri Lankan Chaminda Vaas, Champaka Ramanayake, Pakistani Aaqib Javed and Indian Ventakatesh Prasad are in the BCB’s choice-list for the fast bowling coach. Prasad had already showed his reluctance for the job.
“There are some issues about umpiring in first division, second division and third division. We want to make the game transparent so we’ll take strong step in reducing umpiring errors.”
“The technical committee also raised an important issue. They said Bangladesh mostly strive in Test cricket now after our success in ODI and T20 cricket. They emphasized on playing more Tests. We’ll try to arrange more Tests for our team.”
The BCB president also said that the bilateral series in India is in the process and the update on this tour could be available within the next two weeks. However, the BCB boss said that no official schedule of the tour is confirmed.
