Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad yesterday said violence escalated in the fifth phase of Union Parishad polls although irregularities have reduced, reports UNB. “In this phase, there were less election irregularities but the number of casualties is higher than the previous ones,,” he said. The CEC came up with the observation in a post-election briefing at the media center of the Election Commission secretariat. Rakibuddin said voting was suspended in 53 centers, out of 6484, due to various irregularities, and claimed that the commission took prompt actions against the complaints of irregularities it received. Explaining the reason behind the escalation of violence, he said there is a trend of violence in the country. “I think there’s no reason of such intolerance and I myself is also surprised seeing it. People, involved in the election, could seek remedies from election tribunals as well as courts about the irregularities.” Seven people, including three in Jamalpur, were killed and over 60 others injured as the 5th phase of Union Parishad election was marred by violence and irregularities yesterday. The balloting for the lowest tier of local government election started at 8am and continued till 4pm in 6,484 polling stations.
