The private-owned Jute, Yarn and Textile Mills Workers Federation of Khulna-Jessore industrial belt has announced a 12-day agitation programme to press home its several demand. The decision came from an emergency meeting of the federation held on Tuesday night at Daulatpur Binapani School auditorium in the city with participation of Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) leaders and a large number of workers. Central president of the federation Sheikh Md Ansar Ali presided over it.
The demands for which workers 12-day programme for movement has been announced are reopening of all closed including private-owned Mohsen, Ajax, Sonali and Afil Jute Mills, restoration of disconnected electricity lines in Ajax Jute Mill and payment of all arrear wages and other financial benefits by June 5.
They also demanded allocation of adequate fund needed to purchase raw material for running jute mills undisturbed to reach production target, explore markets at home and abroad for selling products and removal of corrupt officials to make administration of the mills transparent.
The 12-day programme of their ongoing movement include road and railway blockade, hungry procession, protest procession, stick procession, torch procession and lying siege to administrative buildings and staff quarters of these jute mills.
On May 25, leaders of the federation submitted memorandum to the Labour and Employment Director in Dhaka. On May 26, the federation leaders submitted memorandum to the Labour and Employment Minister in Dhaka. On May 27, federation leaders will also submit memorandum to the Chairman of the standing committee of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, according to a press statement issued by the central president of the federation.
On May 28, workers will bring out stick procession at Mirerdanga in the city, on May 29 they will submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister through Deputy Commissioner of Khulna, hungry procession on May 30 and view exchange meeting on May 31 with local journalists.
The federation leaders will sit in a meeting with leaders of different trade unions on June 1 and leaders of different political parties on June 2. On June 3, they will bring out a torch procession at Atra industrial belt which will be followed by a mass hunger strike on June 4 and blockade of Khulna-Jessore highway from 9 am till 12 noon on June 5. Jute mill CBA leaders urged owners of those Private Jute Mills to fulfill their demands for greater economic interest of the country. The president of the federation Sheikh Md Ansar Ali said that a programme like self immolation would be announced if need arises to realise the demands.
