How did you get into composing poems? Who inspired you?

It all started when I was in class-9. I was a student of Daulatkhan Government High School in Bhola. I was part of the Children’s Club. A weekly cultural programme would be held at the Shotodol Youth Fest. I would take my writings there and take them up to the famous authors present. Back then, novelist Mosle Uddin Babul used to encourage me. Later on, Anwarul Islam and Samsul Nahar Lili helped me improve my writings. A lot of people have inspired me to write, especially my father, Hazrat Ali. He used to tell me to write regularly, and never give up. Novelist Farook Nawaz also liked my work. He taught me how to use rhymes in my writing. At the moment, I am fortunate enough that I am able to learn from my mentor, writer of children’s literature, Amirul Islam. I used to write poems for all age groups. Now I am concentrating more on writing rhymes and children’s literature. I am learning what is juvenile literature, how it should be, how it should be written, overall, everything about it.
Please tell us what’s your biggest achievement so far.

My biggest achievement is the happiness of my family. I am getting published. For my writings, I am getting awards and publishing in newspapers. These are my big achievements.

Please tell us about your published books.

So far, 12 books of mine have been published. All of them are for children. My elder brother, Shafiul Azam Islam, gave me some money to publish my first book. Since then, I became extremely enthusiastic about writing. My latest book is ‘Dos Doshe Eksho Chhora’. This is my favourite rhyme book. It was published in the Ekushey Book Fair this year. It received the ACI Ananda Alo Children Literature Award. Legends like Ali Imam, Anisul Haq and Polash Mahbub have also achieved this award.

What’s your future plan?

I cannot think about doing anything else besides writing. Writing is my passion, so regardless of the fact that it’s hard to earn your livelihood just being a poet, I want to continue this as long I can.
