Nazrul Abritti Parishad holds cultural evening today

Marking the 117th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Bangladesh Nazrul Abritti Parishad (BNAP) is organising an evening of talks, songs and poetry recitation today at 5:30pm at the Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium of Central Public Library in the city’s Shahbag area.
Prominent singers Yasmin Mushtari and Mohammad Khaled Hossain are among the singers scheduled to perform. There will also be performances by the recitation artistes of Bangladesh Nazrul Abritti Parisahd and discussion on Nazrul’s contributions to literature and his legacy.
Dhaka University Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque will attend the programme as chief guest while noted poet Asad Chowdhury, writer-publisher Abul Quasem Haider and Nazrul scholar Aminul Islam will be present as special guests. The programme will be chaired by BNAP president, Professor Shaila Ahmed.  
 Kazi Nazrul Islam, one of most diversely talented literary figures ever to have lived in this country, was a poet, composer, lyricist, playwright, novelist, short story writer and a revolutionary. He was born on May 25, 1999 in West Bengal, but an important part of his life was spent in Bangladesh, where he was brought with state honours in 1972 and accorded citizenship in 1976.  
 As a poet and musician, Nazrul was able to capture the emotional dimension of the lives of the common people that cemented his place in the history of Bengali literature.
