There is no legal basis of allegation of ‘mass killing and crimes against humanity’ against the present government, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has observed.
A couple of days back, ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda made it known to the Bangladesh government, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali divulged at a press conference at the foreign ministry yesterday.
The press conference was organised to brief media on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s upcoming visit to Japan. Hasina is scheduled to leave the capital today for Nagoya, Japan on a four-day official visit to attend the G-7 Outreach Meeting. The foreign minister said that the BNP-Jamaat nexus has been bringing this allegation since 2013, but the ICC decision proved again that BNP, Jamaat and their affiliates have been involved in lying against independent Bangladesh and the Bangalee nation.
Especially, he said that anti-liberation Jamaat-e-Islami is running this type of propaganda to cover up their heinous crimes including genocide, rape, arson and crimes against humanity during 1971. The foreign minister also informed that Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu will represent Bangladesh at the oath-taking ceremony of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee scheduled to be held tomorrow.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
Asked if the settlement of the long-pending Teesta water-sharing deal will get complicated following Mamata’s return to power, Minister Ali stressed the need for positive thinking in this regard and added that Dhaka wants the matter settled. Responding to a query regarding a new government in Assam and its allegation about illegal Bangladeshi migration, Ali said that the issue was “still pre-mature” and that Bangladesh is yet to take any stance in this regard.
To another question on seeking consular access to detained senior journalist Shafik Rehman by the United Kingdom government, the foreign minister said that the matter is under consideration. He, however, added that granting consular access to an individual enjoying dual citizenship is not mandatory.
