Dhaka ‘recalls’ envoy from Ankara for 'consultation’

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali yesterday said that the Turkish ambassador in Dhaka was not ‘called back’ rather he went to his country for ‘consultations’ which is normal in diplomacy, reports UNB.
“Bangladesh has also called its ambassador back home from Turkey for consultations,” he said when his attention was drawn to the Turkish president’s statement and subsequent calling its ambassador in Dhaka back to Turkey for ‘consultations’.
The foreign minister was addressing a press conference at his ministry yesterday afternoon. He also said that Bangladesh’s relations with Turkey were normal and that there had been no ‘rift’ even after Turkish President Erdoğan’s reaction to executed war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami. “Normal relationship with Turkey continues. There has been no rift in the current relations. There’s no problem,” Ali said.

“They (Turkey) issued statement…yes, they did. What to do,” said the Foreign Minister insisting that the relations with Turkey remain unhurt.
Earlier on May 19, Turkish Embassy in Dhaka, amid confusion in the wake of media reports, said the Embassy here is open and fully operational.
“Due to the published news that’s not based on the factual information in the media, we feel obliged to clarify that Turkish Embassy in Dhaka is open and fully operational,” the Embassy said in a statement on Thursday.
Erdogan’s predecessor Abdullah Gul also requested to the Bangladesh government in 2012 not to pursue the trial of war criminals that apparently made the Bangladesh government surprised.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and senior ministry officials were present at the press conference.
