Abahani share honours with Mariners

Arshad Hossain sounded the board just 20 seconds before the final whistle as Mariner Youngs forced Abahani Limited to share points with a 3-3 draw in the Green Delta Premier Division Hockey League yesterday at the Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium.
In a hard fought match between the giants Mariner Youngs despite taking the lead at the early hour with Raju Ahmed Tapu with a nice field goal on seventh minute could not keep the momentum up as the title aspirants Abahani made it 1-1 just seven minutes later.
Trailing by 0-1 with the early goal, Abahani bounced back with Romman Sarkar hit the board with a reverse hit after receiving a long ball from midfield on 14th minute (1-1).
Abahani took the lead on the half hour mark when Shafqat Rasool, the Pakistani forward beat Mariner’s keeper Mehrab Hossain Kiron with a reverse hit when his (Shafqat’s) compatriot Mohammed Irfan provided the ball with close range push on 31st (2-1).
Abahani kept up their domination in the second half and increased the lead on 50th minute when Kiron failed to stop an easy hit of Mohammed Irfan being in the line of the ball (3-1).
The Sky-Blues could bring the match beyond Mariner’s reach but failed to convert two consecutive penalty corners on 52nd and 53rdminutes respectively, as they had to pay for it with sharing points while Mariner could halt them coming from two goals deficit.
