LGRD minister off to Turkey
A delegation led by Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain left Dhaka yesterday for Turkey to participate in the three-day conference on “High Level Midterm Review of Istanbul Programme of Action (IPOA) at Antalya there.
Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon will inaugurate the conference on May 27, according to a release.
A total of 48 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and their development partners will take part in the conference. The conference will take decision on challenges and progress to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Death of JU student condoled
Vice -chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Professor Dr Farzana Islam yesterday expressed profound shock at the death of Jamilur Rahman Jisan, a second year student of JU Archaeology Department.
In a condolence message, VC said ‘we lost a meritorious student by premature death of Jisan’.
His (Jisan) death is tragic for us as well as for his family members, the VC added.
VC also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
It is mentioned that, Jamilur Rahman Jisan died of drowning in a pond adjacent to the JU Teachers’ Club yesterday (Tuesday) evening while he was swimming with his fellows in the pond.
BCL leader in road crash
Local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Hasanur Rahman Hasu, 25, was killed in a road accident at Mahiganj area in Rangpur city here Tuesday noon, police and BCL sources said.
Hasu, son of Abu Bakar Siddique of Radhaballov area in the city, was Joint Convener of Rangpur Government College unit of BCL. He was a third year (Honours) student of the Department of Islamic History in the college.
The accident occurred when an auto-rickshaw hit the motorcycle carrying Hasu and his friend Jayonta Kumar from the opposite directions at Mahiganj while they were coming to the city from Sahebganj area in the outskirts of the city.
Both, Hasu and Jayonta were critically injured in the accident when the local people immediately rushed them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
Later, Hasu succumbed to his injuries at the RMCH where Jayonta Kumar has still been undergoing treatment.
CC cameras in Rangpur city soon
Mayor of Rangpur Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu on Tuesday said close circuit (CC) cameras will be set up soon at different turning points and important places in Rangpur city to combat crimes.
The city mayor, also a valiant freedom fighter, made the announcement for turning Rangpur into a crime free city while presiding over the regular monthly meeting of the city corporation at Nagar Bhaban here.
He also laid emphasis on smooth implementation of infrastructural development works like construction of roads, culverts, sewerage systems, institutions, recreation places, water and electricity supply, industries as per long-term master plan.     Independent/agency
