The Barisal Education Board (BEB) has ordered that admissions to two colleges be stopped and issued warnings to 78 colleges, giving them a year’s time each to develop education systems suitable for admitting students in accordance with the capacity fixed by the board.
The two institutions were Vandaria Bihari Lal School and College and Pirojpur Tushkhali Telikhali School and College.
As there is not a single student, teacher or even a college committee in these two institutions, the BEB has ordered that all further functions relating to the colleges be ceased. The BEB threatened to cancel their approval for students’ admissions if they failed to produce satisfactory development results within the stipulated time.
A meeting with the principals and presidents of the college committees was held on May 22 at the BEB auditorium. BEB chairman Prof. Ziaul Haque attended the meeting and addressed it as the chief guest.
A BEB source said 26 college authorities have failed to admit the minimum of 25 students in Science. Similarly, 22 have failed in Commerce, four in Humanities, five in Commerce and Humanities, eight in Commerce and Science, and 15 colleges have failed to gather students in all subjects.
At the meeting, it was found that the number of teachers exceeds the number of students in several colleges. After 44 schools were upgraded to the status of colleges (each called ‘school and college’,) the education system was ruined.
Prof. Ziaul Haque said after forming the colleges in the schools, the authorities thought that all students of their respective schools would take admission to their colleges, but the students did not do so, as they well knew the quality of the teachers of their colleges. He observed that some 33 per cent of SSC-passed students dropped out every year, but the college authorities failed to locate them and provide education to them.
The BEB warned the authorities of 15 colleges that admissions in all the subjects would be stopped if they failed to achieve the minimum standards of teaching or collect students in accordance with BEB requirements. These colleges under the BEB were: Barisal Metropolitan College and Southern Residential College of the city, Barguna New Model College, Purba Jolabari School and College, Aramkathi School and College, Telikhali School and College, Dighirjan School and College, Vandaria Bihari Pilot School and College, LAM United Women’s College, Nasima Keramot Ali College, Pazakhali College, Poshuribunia Islamia Women’s College and Guli Awliapur School and College.
