The government today gave a 24-hour deadline for the edible oil producers who have yet to start producing Vitamin-A enriched oil from their refineries and marketing as well across the country, said a handout of the Industries Ministry, reports BSS. "Legal actions would be taken against the companies to be found reluctant to comply with the government regulations within the next 24 hours," Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu quoted as saying at a meeting in the city yesterday. Amu, who was speaking at a workshop on Implementation of Regulatory Monitoring of Edible Oil Fortification in Bangladesh at Purbani Hotel, instructed Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI) to conduct nationwide mobile court operations to ensure Vitamin-A fortified edible oil at the retailers level. The minister said relevant law has been enacted in 2013 while its regulations have also been formulated to ensure Vitamin-A enriched oil in the country. Now BSTI has to ensure whether the importers and the local oil producers have really been maintaining proper quality through strict monitoring, he added. Amu said when Bangladesh was acclaimed by the global community for health sector achievements, a handful of edible oil producers are seen to be reluctant go by the law. He cautioned the reluctant oil producers to pay attention to the government's desire and drag their legs out from such bad practices in order to protect human health.
