Khulna people recall Aila Day today

For the present generation of Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts residents, recalling May 25 will always have a tragedy entwined with the memory. On this day in 2009, the tidal surge accompanied by cyclonic storm Aila that battered by 120 kmph winds over the south-western part of the country.
An unofficial sources said, at least 190 people were killed in Gabura and Padmopukur union of Satkhira and Dacope and Koyra upazila of Khulna, 4 lakh people became homeless, 237 km embankments were completely and 1557 km partially were damaged, crops on 3.23 lakh acres of land were damaged when the Aila hit the coastal areas in the country on May 25, 2009.
Vast tracks of crop lands, ponds and shrimp enclosures were flooded by saline water under the pressure of strong currents and high tides of the coastal rivers sent from the Bay of Bengal.
Koyra upazila parishad chairman AKM Tamiz Uddin said, “Many homeless people are still bearing the brunt of devastation caused Aila as none at the state or private level has so far taken any positive step for their rehabilitation. These homeless people are still staying in makeshift camps erected on high lands without adequate food and safe drinking water.” Several non-government organisations including Jano Udyog, Khulna, Humanitywatch, Aila Durgato Sanghati Mancha have chalked out elaborate programmes today in the city to mark the 7th anniversary of ‘Aila-hit Day.’
Convener of Jano-Udyog, Khulna Advocate Kudrat-e-Khuda said that Bangladesh suffers huge economic loses due to frequent natural calamities triggered by the global climate change.
