‘Drive in Sundarbans soon’

STAFF REPORTER, Khulna

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Khulna will launch a joint drive involving the forest department, police and the Bangladesh Coast Guards to nab pirates and poachers menacing wild life, fishermen and woods and recover illegal arms at the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, approving the home ministry so that fishermen would be able to fish safely there.
The RAB DG Benazir made this comment after a meeting with high officials of taskforce on Wednesday (May 24) noon at a press briefing with local journalists at Khulna Circuit House in the city. He said, “Our main goal is to ensure security of wildlife, fishermen, mawalis and extractors of forest resources who are sources of huge revenues. The coastguard ship is patrolling this area round the clock to check piracy and abduction and ensure safety of the poor fishermen.”
Executive Director of Sundarban Academy, Khulna Prof Anwarul Quadir alleged that lack of logistic support; political influence and corrupt practices by many senior officials are stated by some forest staff to be the major reasons behinds this hostile situation. The robbers not only committing kidnappings at arms point for ransom but also looting fishing trawlers, fishes, money and personal belongings to fishermen. As a result, about 20,000 families of fishermen of coastal belts are feeling quite insecure as they cannot go on with their professional work safe and sound.
Among others, Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Md Nazmul Ahsan, Superintendent of Police, Khulna Md Habibur Rahman, RAB-6 Commanding Officer (CO) Sardar Rafiqul Islam were present in the press briefing.
The pirates have gone out of control now as they use sophisticated arms for committing heinous crimes while the forest guards have nothing to match such modern arms, Director General of RAB Md Benazir Ahmed said, adding: they will have continued their special operations at various points of the Sundarbans.
These armed hoodlums regularly poach wild animals, cut down trees, kidnap fishermen, honey collectors and smuggle contrabands like animal skins and wild life from the Sundarban forest with apparent impunity,
he said.
