Along with conducting search and rescue operations, the Bangladesh Navy has been distributing food, medicines, drinking water and other relief materials to Roanu-affected people, especially in Kutubdia, Moheshkhali and adjacent areas, since Monday.
A naval officer engaged in the operations said at least 500 members of the Navy along with three ships—BN Samudra Joy, BN LCT-103 and BN LCT-104—and three high speed boats have been deployed in the affected areas.
Commander Rashed, commander of the naval warship BN Samudra Joy, said the rescue and relief operations will continue till the situation improves. “A naval medical team has started treating and providing medicines to the cyclone victims,” he added.
The high speed boats were searching for missing persons in the wake of the cyclonic storm Roanu, which has killed at least 25 people and injured many more.
According to the Disaster Management and Relief Directorate, at least 23,000 houses were destroyed and 59,000 partially damaged in Chittagong district.
The storm also damaged over 23 km of coastal embankments, leading to losses worth about Tk. 1,000 crore, according to sources in the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB). Disaster management and relief minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said that the government has been providing food, medicines, water and other support to the affected people in the coastal areas. “Rehabilitating the homeless and cyclone-affected people has become the priority of the government,” he added.
Maya also said the government has allocated Tk 1.2 crore of relief funds and 6,500 tonnes of rice for the Roanu victims.
