At least nine villages of Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali were flooded by tidal water as flood control embankment of Debpur and Nizampur areas got damaged by Saturday’s cyclonic storm Roanu.
Afzal Molla, an inhabitant of Dhankhali union parishad, said villages went under 3 feet water. Upazila nirbahi officer of Kalapara Masud Hasan Patoary said he visited cyclone affected areas and prepared a list for distributing relief among affected people.
Abul Khaier, executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board, Kalapara, said cyclone Roanu washed away 400 feet flood control embankment.
According to sources, a total of 3,000 acres of robi crop field of 8 villages remained under salt water when 100 feet flood control embankment of Boubazaar area and 100 feet flood control embankment of Khalifarchar village in Rangabali upazila were washed away by the cyclone. On the other hand, 5000 acres of land and huge fish farm of nine villages in Rangabali upazila had gone under tidal surge. Besides, 157 thatched houses, flood control embankment, bridge-culvert including 2.5 kilometers road were also damaged, sources added.
In Noakhali, standing crops of about 100 hectares of land were damaged by clyclone Raonur.
The cyclone washed away domestic animals and deer from Nijumdip and Bandartila under Hatiya upazila as well. Some 40 to 50 crore taka was estimated as loss in Hatiya, Subarnachar and Companiganj upazilas of the district.
When contacted UNO Abu Hasnat said many deer died while 11 were recovered. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday distributed rice among cyclone victims in Companiganj upazila of the district.
