The signing ceremony of Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) was held at Economic Relations Division (ERD) of Ministry of Finance on Sunday, says a press release.
Masato Watanabe, ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, and Mohammad Mejbahuddin, senior secretary of ERD signed the exchange of notes on behalf of their governments.
Mikio Hataeda, chief representative of JICA Bangladesh Office, also attended the ceremony and signed the grant agreement for the project.
Since 2002, Japan has been providing academic opportunities for Bangladeshi government officials and Bangladesh Bank officials to obtain higher study in various fields such as public administration, economic planning, law, urban/rural planning, and public finance and investment policy at 9 different Japanese universities. 268 Bangladeshi officials were sent to Japan under the JDS and 226 fellows have returned to Bangladesh after completing their study successfully.
In May 2014, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during her visit to Japan and requested to increase the number of JDS fellows from Bangladesh. The Japanese government decided to increase the number of JDS fellows from 15 to 25 last year, and further, to 30 this year responding to the request. It is expected that JDS fellows, with increased quota, would play a significant and growing role within the Bangladesh Government/ Bangladesh Bank after their return to Bangladesh by utilising their experiences in Japan, and contribute to the socio-economic development in Bangladesh.
It is also expected that JDS fellows would eventually contribute to widening and consolidating the basis of the friendship between Bangladesh and Japan.
