Domestic powerhouse Abahani Limited is desperate to break the defeat-jinx when they take on Gazi Group Cricketers in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) today at BKSP-3.
The match is turned out to a must-win match for the Dhanmondi outfit who is languishing at ninth place in the point table at the moment. With just six points in seven matches, the rest of the four match indeed is must-win match for the giant if they want to move into the super-six phase.
They have been in three-match losing streak now including a defeat against Kalabagan Cricket Academy who beat Abahani to open the account in seventh game. The loss against KCA is the testament of Abahani’s dismal condition in the DPL whereas they formed a strong team on paper in a bid to regain the title after 2011. But that aspiration now looked distant dream when the super league is uncertain.
The Tamim Iqbal-led Abahani looked out-of-sort and jaded in every department even though the captain himself was amongst the runs. Still he is culpable of not converting the fifties into centuries.
Luck was also not with the team. When the batting unit fired, the bowling unit remained misfired. At the moment, they are looking for the service of Shakib Al Hasan who is now in India to play IPL. Since Shakib’s KKR moved into the play-off spot, Abahani wouldn’t get his service unless KKR is eliminated when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Eliminator game on Wednesday.
They are expected to get the service of Indian all-rounder Rajat Bhatia in the game while Shahadat Hossain Rajib whose suspension was lifted only for domestic cricket might play this match.
While the scenario of Abahani is gloomy, their archrival Mohammedan Sporting Club is now at the top position despite being shocked by CCS in the last match. Mohammedan hopes to bounce back as they face off Prime Bank Cricket Club today at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Prime Doleshwar also collects 10 points in seven matches like Mohammedan but the net-run-rate keeps them in second position. Doleshwar however will play against KCA at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.
The KCA stunned Abahani in the previous match to open their account and surely expects to replicate the performance against inform Doleshwar.
“We are in top of our game at the moment. Hope we can continue this,” said Doleshwar opener Imtiaz Hossain Tanna who scored 404 runs with two centuries and as many half-centuries so far.
Tanna is in second slot of batting chart, just behind Kalabagan Krira Chakra’s Hamilton Maskadza (419) and will be Doleshwar prime man to take them on top.
“We have the great chance to be champions. We want to grab the opportunity with both hands,” he added.
