Three much-acclaimed full-length feature films ‘Mrittika Maaya’ (Earthen Love),  ‘Anil Bagchir Ek Din’ (A Day in the Life of Anil Bagchi) and ‘Sutopar Thikana’ (Her Own Adress) will be screened at International Film Festival of South Asia - Toronto  (IFFSA Toronto).
The Canadian Premiere of the films ‘Mrittika Maaya’ and ‘Sutopar Thikana’ will be held at Cineplex Odeon Morningside Cinemas and Woodside Square Cinemas  today and tomorrow respectively, while ‘Anil Bagchir Ek Din’ will be screened in ‘North American Premiere’ categories at Cineplex Odeon Morningside Cinemas today.
The film ‘Mrittika Maaya’, which sets a record by winning 17 awards in the National Film Award 2013, depicts the life of Khirmohan, who  was a potter once. Presently he owns a potter homestead and a piece of land with a banyan tree. There lives another person in the same family named Boishakh. He is a potter by profession and a sculptor at the same time. Khirmohan and Boishakh have a teacher-student relationship, but no genealogical link. Boishakh was found abandoned in a stormy night at the Bengali New Year fair. ‘Mrittika Maaya’ is a story of Khirmohan and Boishakh who love the art of clay and struggle for earthen love. Directed by  Gazi Rakayet, the casts of the film include Raisul Islam Asad, Mamunur Rashid, Titas Zia, Shormi Mala and others.
Centring the story of the Liberation War of Bangladesh, the film ‘Anil Bagchir Ek Din’ depicts the life of Anil Bagchi, a timid Hindu young man, lives in Dhaka. His schoolteacher father and only elder sister Atoshi live in their village. His mother had died at his birth. The idealist and honest father tried to imbue his ideals in Anil. It is set in the middle of 1971 when Dhaka is a besieged city. One day very early in the morning Anil receives a letter informing that his father had been killed by the Pakistani military. Anil starts to go to his village. The journey was fraught with danger and of utmost uncertainty. On the way Anil comes to know a middle aged man named Ayub Ali, who is accompanied by his wife and children. Ali is a thoroughly boring character and likes to talk. He initially appears quite a reactionary, but gradually Anil comes to admire his humanity. He instructs Anil never to reveal his Hindu name to anyone. He tells him to go by the name of Ali’s brother in law, Mohsin. At one point of the journey Pakistani military personnel stop the bus and everyone is ordered to disembark. When Anil is asked his name, he tells his real name. Ayub Ali risks his own life trying to save Anil. Anil’s captors take him to the bank of a river when the night is awash in moonlight. Anil loses himself in appreciation of the moonlit night until the fatal bullet is shot.
Directed by Morshedul Islam, Aref Syed played the role of Anil Bagchi, while Jyotika Jyoti shared the screen as Anil’s sister in the film. Other important casts of the film include Gazi Rakayet, Farhana Mithu, Shahidul Alam Sachchu, A.M. Mohsin, Khalilur Rahman Quaderi and Misha Shawdagar, among others.
On the other hand, Prashun Rahman’s film titled ‘Sutopar Thikana’, which received a government grant, depicts the different stages of a woman that she comes across from her birth to death. The film is an adaptation of the book titled ‘Ishhorer Ichhe Nei Boley’ written by the director himself. Popular actress Aparna Ghosh played the title role in the film and portrays four particular stages of a woman through the character of Sutopar-- as an adolescent, a married woman, later a widow and also as an old lady.
Produced by Imation Creator, Jayanta Chattopadhyay, Shahadat Hossain, Mahmudul Islam Mithu, Robi Sikder and Saika Ahmed and Nibir Kumar, among others, have shared the screen with Aparna in the film.
