The US-based SITE Intelligence Group, in its report, said yesterday that the Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the killing of a homeopath physician in Bangladesh's Kushtia district.
The IS-affiliated Amaq news agency said in a brief Arabic message that IS fighters in Bangladesh killed a doctor who “called to Christianity” in the western district of Kushtia, according to the SITE Intelligence Group.
The Independent could not independently verify this claim.
However, police had said earlier that the assault bore similarities to a spate of previous attacks by suspected Islamists. They also said that a personal dispute could be the motive for the killing.
Physician Sanaullah, 57, a resident of the East Mazampur area of the district town, was going to the Bottoil union on Friday morning along with two of his friends, including Saifuzzaman, an assistant professor in the Bangla department of Kushtia Islamic University, when a group of miscreants intercepted their motorcycle.
The assailants stabbed them indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving Sanaullah dead on the spot and Saifuzzaman and the other friend, Rahman, injured.
According to the police, Sanaullah and the injured teacher were followers of Lalon Shah.
