Aiming to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, the government formed SREDA for promoting sustainable energy and generating 2,000 MW electricity in 2021 and 4,000 MW in 2030, reports BSS.
The present renewable energy and energy efficiency scenario of Bangladesh is 423 MW and renewable energy share reached 3.45 per cent.
The energy efficiency master plan is targeted to save 15 per cent power by 2021 and 20 per cent by 2030 and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Develop-ment Authority (SREDA) will play a pivotal role to achieve these targets, according to a ministry official.
Around 4.4 million Solar Home System (SHS), 366 Solar Irrigation, 140 Solar Drinking Water System, 38,000 Biogas Plants, 20,00,000 Improved Cook Stove and 68 Improved Rice Parboiling System have
been installed in the country, while many Solar Home Systems (SHS) are underway to be installed for generating electricity.
Talking to the news agency, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said the government attached due importance to renewable energy and energy efficiency issues and as such enacted SREDA Act in 2012 to facilitate, regulate and to promote all aspects of renewable energy, energy conservation and development for a sustainable energy solution.
“The government formed SREDA to promote sustainable energy and build energy conscious society to ensure energy security aimed at ensuring ten per cent renewable energy supply to the national power grid by the year 2021 and reducing carbon emission,” he said.
Nasrul said Bangladesh, aspiring to become middle income country by 2021, is expecting gradual increase of energy production and energy use to meet its demand, adding, “Currently 76 per cent people are enjoying electricity access due to bold and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and there is a plan to bring all citizens under power access by 2021.”
The ministry official said the natural gas is the only indigenous energy source, would not be able to meet that energy ambition. The resource is also not unlimited and the country is already experiencing gradual shortfall in supply with respect to demand.
Exploiting the full potential of alternative energy is one avenue which can contribute towards long term energy security of the country.
