8 Shibir men arrested
Police in a drive arrested eight leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, from Shimultala Ghat in in Rajshahi on Friday evening.
Tipped off, a team of police raided the area and arrested the eight Shibir men while holding a clandestine meeting around 6 pm, said Ali Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Bagha Police Station.
The arrestees were identified as Rashidul Islam Ranju, president of Bhagha upazila unit Islami Chhatra Shibir, Sabuj, office secretary of upazila unit Shibir, Nazmul Islam, Bulbul Hasan, Faisal Ahmed, Raihan, Manik and Milon.
Police also recovered some jihadi books from their possessions, the OC added.
Old man crushed under train
An elderly man was crushed under the wheels of a train at Asgram Rahir Dhal in Paba upazila on Friday.
Witnesses said a Rajshahi-bound train from Rahanpur hit Abdus Sattar Gujon, 75, a resident of Shah Makhdum area of the city, while he was crossing the rail track around 7 pm, leaving him dead on the spot.
Railway police said they recovered the body and sent it to local hospital for autopsy.
Drug trader jailed in Rajshahi
In an anti-drug operation, a mobile court has sentenced a drug trader youth to two years jail in Puthiya Upazila of the district yesterday, police sources here said yesterday.
The convicted person was identified as Aslam Ali, 27, son of late Fazlur Rahman of Varuapara village under the same upazila.
On a tip-off, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a sudden raid at the area and arrested Aslam Ali. The team recovered 58,000 liters of liquor-making ingredients and 15 liters of liquor from his possession.
Afterwards, he was produced before a mobile court along with the seized goods. Executive Magistrate Md Nuruzzaman sentenced him to two years jail. The court also passed an order for destroying the seized drug items instantly.
Youth arrested with yaba
Police arrested a youth with 950 pieces of yaba tablets at Kosaipara village under Godagari Upazila in Rajshahi in the early hours of yesterday. The arrested was identified as Selim Reza, 25, son of Md Alauddin of the same village.
On a tip-off, a police team conducted a sudden raid in the area at around 5.30 am and arrested him with the contraband items along with a mobile phone set and Taka 3,000 in cash.
A case was recorded with Godagari Police Station in this connection and the seized goods and arrested was handed over to the police.
