NARSINGDI: The prospect of Thai guava cultivation is bright in the vast reddish and high lands in the district, reports BSS.
A good number of farmers and unemployed educated youths mainly in Shibpur, Belabor and Polash Upazilas of the district are now eagerly cultivating Thai guava in placing of Kazi guava in their reddish and high fallow lands.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said cultivation of Kazi guava variety has began in the district since 2000. But in the recent year they have changed the variety of Kazi guava and in placing they have started cultivating the variety of Thai guava motivated by the department of DAE.
Deputy Director of DAE, Latafat Hossain said the main characteristic of the variety of Thai guava is that the tree bears fruit only the period of two years after its plantation and the trees bear fruit around the year while variety of Kazi guava bears fruit after three or four years its plantation and the trees bears fruit only two months of a year.
Thai guava is more tasteful and nutritious then Kazi guava. It is comparatively big in size then Kazi payara. Its market value is higher than Kazi guava. Per Kg Thai guava is now selling at taka 60 to 80 which contains only three to four guava.
He said the department has given knowledge to the farmers on the cultivation process of the variety of Thai guava and motivating them to cultivate more Thai guava collecting sapling from horticulture of the DAE.
