Barisal Education Board yesterday took punitive action against two head examiners who wrongly failed 1,141 examinees who sat the Hindu Religious Studies module in this year’s SSC examinations, reports UNB.
One of the students, Sarbojit Ghosh Hridoy of Barisal Udayan Secondary School, committed suicide by jumping off an under-construction building following the publication of the SSC results. Religious studies is one of the ‘compulsory’ modules in which failure negates even stellar results in other subjects and a student must sit the SSC exams again. Some 1492 examinees under the Barisal Education Board, including Hridoy, were declared to have failed their SSC exams in results published on May 11 as they failed the Hindu Religious Studies module.
Following a petition by a group of the 1492 students, the education board carried out an investigation and rechecked their papers. They found 1141 of the papers to have been wrongly marked as failed - 94 of them went on to secure GPA-5.
Two teachers were found to be responsible for the gross oversight- Juran Chandra Chakraborty of Barisal B M School and
Biren Chakraborty of Bakerganj Bibichini School.
BEB chairman Prof Md. Ziaul Huq said they have recommended stopping monthly salary, cancellation of MPO, and decided to recuse the teachers from all activities related to examinations under the BEB permanently.
They have already sent two letters to the Directorate of Secondary Education and Higher Education (DSHE) in this connection, he said.
The corrective measures came too late however for Hridoy, who was found to have passed the exams securing a GPA of 4.7.
