Election campaign has gained momentum in seven union parishads in Jhenidah Sadar. All the candidates have been striving hard to woo the voters.
The election is scheduled to be held on May 28. District election office sources said elections in nine unions under the upazila was held earlier on May 8. Polls in other unions could not be held due to conflict over boundary demarcation.
The EC said a total of 119,960 voters are going to cast their vote in seven unions. According to sources, a total of 31 candidates are contesting for the posts of UP chairmen, 226 for ward member and 64 for the reserved women seats. Anwara Khatun, a voter of Madhuhati union said she was astonished as the candidates are meeting her frequently as if she is one of the most important women in the area. “I was never honoured in the last 20 years by any one of the candidates”, she said.
When contacted, Jahangir Hossain, district election officer in Jhenidah said the EC will strictly hold free and fair elections at any cost as the commission will show zero tolerance during the elections.
Deputy commissioner Mahbub Alam Talukder said adequate law enforcers will be ready to maintain law and order during the elections.
