The High Court on Tuesday rejected a bail petition filed by sacked Sylhet city mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury in the Shah AMS Kibria murder case, reports UNB.
A High Court bench, led by Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akond, passed the order.
Defence lawyer Barrister Moinul Hossain said Ariful’s name was not there in the first and second chargesheets but included in the 3rd one as the government plotted against him to dismiss him from the mayoral post. State counsel Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Bashir Ullah said there is no chance for Arful to get bail as the judicial court has already recorded the testimonies of 18 witnesses in the case. Earlier on March 22, the High Court granted bail to Ariful for 15 days on the grounds that his mother was ill, and asked him to surrender before the lower court on the expiry of the bail. After the expiry of the bail, Ariful filed the bail petition. Five people, including Kibria, were killed and 70 others injured in a grenade attack on a public rally of local Awami League at Baidder Bazar in Sadar upazila of Habiganj district on January 27, 2005. After the incident, Awami League leader Abdul Mozid Khan, MP filed two cases—one for murder and another under the Explosives Substances Act—with Habiganj Police Station the following day.
