Noted human rights activist Sultana Kamal has said that only those who believe in the ideals of the Liberation War should be in politics. Others have no right to be in politics in the country.
She made the remarks at a discussion on ensuring the rights of the minority people. It was organised by the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council at the CIRDAP auditorium yesterday (Saturday).
Sultana Kamal said the demand for minority people’s rights is a political issue. This vital issue cannot be discussed by excluding politics.
“In this country, there has always been religious discrimination and religion-based politics since the Pakistani era. After the Liberation War in 1971, we made a strong commitment to ban the use of religion in politics. It was mentioned in the Constitution in 1972 as well. We had commitment and constitutional liabilities and pledges even after the war. But suddenly, the promises were broken in 1975,” said the advisor to the former caretaker government.
Referring to the Awami League, she said: “We expect more from people who claim to be pro-Liberation. It is their moral duty to establish secularism and ensure the rights of minorities.”
The discussion was also attended by health and family welfare minister Mohammad Nasim, civil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon, council general secretary Rana Dasgupta, political figures Suranjit Sen Gupta, Dilip Barua, Mujahidul Islam Selim and others.
The Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council put forward some demands, which include ensuring 20pc seats in parliament for the minorities, constitutional secularism and equality, and alleviating discrimination in education.
