Investigation into the murder of Prof. AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee is in the final stage and will be completed soon, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said at Rajshahi University yesterday.
“We can reveal the names of the killers in no time, but we are silent now for the sake of investigation,” he added. The minister was addressing teachers, students and other guests at a meeting organised by the Rajshahi University Teachers’ Association (RUTA), at the varsity’s Kazi Nazurl Islam auditorium.
“Additional law-enforcers will be deployed in Rajshahi, especially around the campus,” he added.
The home minister assured Prof. Siddiquee’s daughter, Rizwana Hasin Shatovi, that she would get justice. “We have taken the case very seriously and justice will be done,” he stressed.
Addressing the audience, inspector-general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque said, “We are working quietly. We have to be silent publicly for the sake of investigation.” He urged the teachers and students to keep faith in the police.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid expressed sorrow at the death of Prof. Siddiquee and urged the home minister to ensure the security of teachers, as they were “the pillar of education”.
Expressing solidarity with the movement of RU teachers and students, he pushed for the seven-point charter of demands from the state. The demands include holding a fair investigation, tracing the killers, speedy trial, and exemplary punishment for the killers.
