Minor boy falls to death
A six-year-old boy died and his playmate was injured after falling into a borehole in Sukundir Bagh area of Gazipur city yesterday.
Witnesses said the 10-12 feet deep and five feet wide hole was dug in front of Ideal School and College for setting up a submersible water pump.
In the morning, Romanul, 6, son of Billal Hossain, and Pervez, 5, son of Amir Ali, fell into the hole, filled with water, while playing beside it around 10am.
As the mishap came to their notice, locals pulled up the two children from the hole.
They were rushed to Tongi Hospital where doctors declared Romanul dead.
14-party alliance leaders visit Rajshahi today
Central leaders of Awami League-led 14-party alliance led by its spokesman, Awami League presidium member and Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim, will visit Rajshahi city Sunday.
A statement issued on Friday by 14-party alliance's office coordinator and deputy office secretary of Awami League Advocate Mrinal Kanti Das said that as part of its central programme in protest against the BNP-Jamaat's repeated secret killings, terrorism, anarchy, militant activities and anti-democracy and anti-state conspiracies, the leaders of the alliance will pay a visit to Rajshahi city to take part in a number of events there.
1 arrested with heroin, hemp
A team of Narcotics Control Department (NDC) on Friday arrested a man and seized 100 grams of heroin from his possession at Bijoynagar Moor in Rajshahi.
On a tip-off, a team of NDC launched a drive in the area and arrested Rabiul Islam alias Helal, 35, son of Badiuzzaman of the upazila, along with 100 grams of heroin around 7am, said Khalilur Rahma, an official of the Rajshahi unit of the department. A case was filed in this connection.
Solo painting exhibition begins in capital
A two-week solo painting exhibition titled Beyond the Horizon by artist Pervaj Hasan Rigan began at La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka in Dhanmondi in the capital.
The inaugural ceremony of this exhibition was held on Friday.
Eminent artist Samarjit Roy Chowdhury attended the ceremony as the chief guest and Prof Abul Barq Alvi, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka and Prof Jamal Ahmed, Department of Drawing and Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, Mohammad Ezzat, Ambassador of Egypt to Bangladesh, attended as the special guests.
Bruno Plasse, Director of Alliance Française de Dhaka, welcomed the distinguished guests and presided over the opening ceremony. The exhibition will be open to all till 24 May 2016.
Youth held with yaba
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged drug-trader with 1,350 pieces of yaba tablets from Bhatupara area under Mohanpur Upazila of the district Thursday evening, RAB sources here said yesterday.
The detained person was identified as Zillur Rahman, 24, son of Almash Ali of Jaminpur village under Shibgonj Upazila of Chapainawabganj district.
On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a sudden raid in the area at around 7.30 pm and arrested him with the contraband item.
A case was recorded with the Police Station in this connection and the seized goods and arrested person were handed over to the police.
