KHULNA: Litchi, the mouth watering popular summer fruit, has started appearing in the local markets in the region including Khulna city, reports BSS.
This is the early variety of litchi and it is available only in small quantity that has put the sellers in advantageous position pricewise and low-income consumers in a difficult situation. Many seasonal traders set up makeshift shops with the juicy fruit at different points in the city, especially Borobazar, Clay Road, Helatala, Dawkbangla, Gallyamary, Miapara Bazar, Sheikhpara Bazar, Farazipara Bazar, Sandha Bazar, Khalishpur, Daulatpur and Khanjahan Ali Bazar displaying the fruit.
Every bunch of 100 litchis is being sold from Tk 260 to 300 based on the basis of quality and size. Despite the high price, the upper class and rich people are purchasing the most sought after seasonal fruit.
“Currently, I have no capacity to purchase litchi at this high price. I think, I have to wait for some more days when the price comes down,” Saikat Mohammad Sohag, a private worker, who came to Boro Bazar for purchasing litchi, told BSS while expressing his reaction.
The sellers said the price is high as the supply is scanty. The price will be reduced to some extent when the supply will increase in the next couple of days.
While talking to BSS Mossarraf Hossain, a small trader at Boro Bazar said that many of the farmers are seen harvesting unripe litchi in a bid to get more money.
Some farmers are harvesting the fruit before its ripening in the hope of earning more profits.
Deputy Director of Khulna Department of Agriculture Extension Abdul Latif said litchi mainly grows well in Rajshahi, Dinajpur and Ishwardi districts, but many farmers of Satkhira, Jessore and Khulna are producing improved varieties of litchi in the district. He said commercial farming of some of the fruits, especially mango and litchi, are gradually being expanded in Khulna region.
