Deaths by lightning

With each passing year, nature is turning freakier in its ferocity because of climate change, so there might also be a link to this increased lightning with global warming
Deaths by lightning

The freakish nature has surprised us all: during the time span of just 48 years, Bangladesh has witnessed as many as 55 deaths as they were struck by lighting across the country. There have also been scores others who were injured. We express our deepest sympathy for those who have lost their near and dear ones in this disastrous situation.
We in Bangladesh often hear deaths caused by lightning and this happens mostly when during the summer months the nor’wester lashes the country. But on a single day, Thursday, lightning across the country killed 45 people, which was very unusual. According to a report published in this newspaper in Bangladesh the highest number of deaths in a year, 285, was recorded in 2013, but this year in this month of May the figure rose well above 100 and there is every reason to be worried over this unusual strikes of lighting.
We can hardly expect to tame nature of this freak, but surely as precautions can save lives, the government, the NGOs and the media can take serious efforts of campaign to make people aware how a person in the open can save himself/herself from a strike. It is commonsense that during the stormy weather one should not remain outdoors, but in villages of Bangladesh farmers work in the field as a necessity and they usually become victims of lightning.
Everybody should be cautious as to what they should do during this inclement weather; but the farmers must be made more cautious as they work in the open where there are no long trees. They should be taught that when a person is caught by lighting, the nearer he is to the ground, without lying down, he is more safe. Crouching with only balls of the feet touching the ground can save a person from the imminent disaster. But better it is one should at the earliest run to a safe shelter, before a lightning strikes.
Experts say palms and other long trees which were more common in the villages in the past used to absorb lightings; but as they are hard to come by now, there is this increase of deaths by lightning. With each passing year, nature is turning freakier in its ferocity because of climate change, so there might also be a link to this increased lightning with global warming.
Therefore, for protecting our environment where we can live relatively safe, tree plantation programmes should now get momentum. In fact, the government should now take lighting seriously, calling it a new kind of disaster, and act accordingly for its mitigation.
